As Autumn Grows Colder:

Cold Dew, or Han Lu, marks a deeper stage of autumn, when cooler mornings and evenings become more noticeable while dryness may still linger. It is a time to continue nourishing moisture while beginning to pay more attention to warmth.

Arriving around October 8–9, Cold Dew is the seventeenth of the Twenty-Four Solar Keys. Following the balance of the Autumn Equinox, it reflects the gradual transition toward the colder conditions of late autumn.

From Dryness to Cold + Dryness

During early autumn, warmth can linger even as the air becomes drier. By Cold Dew, cooler conditions begin to play a larger role. In seasonal wellness, this means continuing to care for moisture while also becoming more attentive to keeping the body comfortably warm.

This transition does not happen everywhere at the same pace. Warm afternoons may still follow chilly mornings, and local weather can vary considerably. Cold Dew is less about following the calendar rigidly and more about noticing whether your food, clothing, activity, and daily rhythm still fit the conditions around you.

Continue Nourishing Moisture

The arrival of cooler weather does not mean that autumn dryness has disappeared. Cold Dew continues the seasonal emphasis on moist and gently nourishing foods.

Apples, grapes, grapefruit, peaches, mangoes, tomatoes, and hawthorn are among the fruits traditionally recommended at this time. Sesame, rice, honey, jujube, and yam are other seasonal choices.

Rather than changing our diet completely from one Solar Key to the next, we can allow it to evolve gradually. Foods that supported moisture earlier in autumn can continue to have a place as cooler weather develops.

Begin Protecting Warmth

What becomes more noticeable during Cold Dew is the increasing need to protect warmth.

As mornings and evenings become cooler, small changes can make a difference. Wearing covered shoes and socks, keeping the feet comfortable, and adding another layer when needed are simple ways to adjust as temperatures fall.

Outdoor activity may also shift with the season. On colder mornings, consider waiting until after sunrise before exercising, and choose movement that feels comfortable without pushing yourself to excessive sweating.

A warm foot soak in the evening can also be a simple Cold Dew ritual. It offers a few quiet minutes to warm up, slow down, and notice how your body feels at the end of the day.

Finding Your Autumn Rhythm

As autumn deepens, our daily rhythm may begin to change too.

You may notice that you feel tired earlier, that getting out of bed on a cool morning feels different from a few weeks ago, or that your energy naturally begins to settle as daylight becomes shorter.

Seasonal wellness does not require following the clock rigidly. Instead, notice what is changing and allow your routines to adjust gradually. A regular sleep schedule, adequate rest, and quieter evenings can help support this transition through late autumn.

Looking Ahead

Cold Dew brings us closer to Shuang Jiang, or Frost’s Descent, the final Solar Key of autumn. As colder conditions become more established, seasonal wellness will gradually shift from managing autumn dryness and protecting warmth toward preparing for winter’s quieter period of rest and storage.

There is no need to live as though winter has already arrived. For now, Cold Dew invites us to continue nourishing what autumn tends to dry while becoming more attentive to warmth as the season moves forward.

Final Thought

“Cold Dew reminds us that seasonal change happens one step at a time. Autumn dryness may still call for moisture and nourishment, while cooler mornings and evenings invite us to protect warmth. By noticing these changes and adjusting gradually, we can prepare for the colder, quieter season ahead.“
